“Maintaining a Healthy Functioning Masticatory System through Orthodontic Therapy”

Orthodontic therapy routinely changes the patient’s occlusal condition and this can significantly modify masticatory function.  It is important that the goals of orthodontic therapy include the development of a sound relationship between the new occlusal position and the functional position of temporomandibular joints.  This presentation will discuss important functional features of the temporomandibular joints and their relationship to the occlusal position.  Treatment goals for the development of orthopedic stability will be presented so as to minimize masticatory dysfunctions, such as temporomandibular disorders.  The relationship between TMD and orthodontic therapy will be discussed and a simple TMD screening evaluation prior to orthodontic therapy will be presented.  This course will also provide an update on current thoughts regarding the etiology and management of common TMD Disorders.

Dr. Okeson is a 1972 graduate of the University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has been a member of  the faculty at the University of Kentucky in 1974.  Presently he is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Ortal Health Science and the Director of the College’s Orofacial Pain Center, which he established in 1977, The Center represents a multidisciplinary effort in the management of chronic orofacial pain problems.  Dr. Okeson has developed several post-graduate training programs at the Center, including a Master of Science Degree in Orofacial Pain.  Dr. Okeson has more than 200 professional publications in the area of occlusion, TM disorders and orofacial pain in various national and international journals. The sixth edition of Dr. Okeson’s textbook, Management of Temporomandibular Disorders and Occlusion, is published by C. V. Mosby Publishers which is used in most of the dental schools in the United States as well as in many other countries.  It has been translated into eleven different foreign languages.

Dr. Okeson is a past President and Fellow of the American Academy of Orofacial Pain.  He is a founding Diplomate and past president of the American Board of Orofacial Pain.  He has been active in the American Academy of Orofacial Pain developing treatment and curriculum guidelines for TM disorders and orofacial pain.  He is the editor of the AAOP guidelines entitled: “Orofacial Pain:  Guidelines for Classification, Assessment, and Management, 3rd ed. which are used as treatment standards throughout the world.

“Integrating Gnathology and NeuroMuscular Occlusion in Orthodontics”

How do you integrate gnathology and neuromuscular dentistry into the practice of orthodontics?  Can you?  Should you?  How much does either matter in the day to day practice of orthodontics?  This presentation will review the development and rationale of my current approach to treating orthodontic patients in general and functional/orthopedic and TMD patients in particular.  My background in gnathology includes the two year Roth-Williams long course, “played by the book” for years in practice and as clinical professor at CWRU department of orthodontics.  The last four years have been focused on neuromuscular dentistry in attendance at LVI (and elsewhere) for courses on neuromuscular occlusion.  Integrating both currently into private practice makes for some schizoid moments and the occasional epiphany.  This presentation is designed to provide more information and perspective than answers.

Dr. White is Assistant Clinical Professor at the Case Western Reserve University Department of Orthodontics.  He is also an instructor at a TMJ/TMD Clinic. He graduated DDS Cum Laude in 1977 from OSU Dental School.  In 1982 he earned his MSD Orthodontics from CSRU.

Dr. White is a member of the Cleveland Society of Orthodontists, Great Lakes Society of Orthodontists, American Association of Orthodontists, and the International Association of Esthetic Orthodontists.
